From the Jewish Federation

It is with profound sorrow that we mark the tragic and untimely passing of Rabbi Aryeh Hirschfield, who died last week while in Mexico. Rabbi Hirschfield had a lasting impact on Jewish life in Oregon, having served communities in Ashland, Eugene, Bend, and here in Portland at Havurah Shalom, Beth Israel, and the congregation which he founded and to which he dedicated the final years of his life, P’nai Or.

Aryeh was a brilliant Judaic scholar, a multi-talented musician, and a beloved spiritual leader. Those who met him were immediately drawn to him by his warmth and openness. Our entire community is impoverished by his passing. We send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends, and to the congregants who so closely and personally identified with him.
